What data we collect
When you use Forked Tongue, we collect the following information:
- Your email address and display name (when you create an account)
- Your native language selection
- Conversation messages you exchange with AI characters
- Voice recordings are processed transiently for speech recognition and are not permanently stored
- Usage data such as which characters you talk to, session length, and learning progress
- Basic device information (browser type, operating system) for compatibility and debugging
How we use your data
- Provide the language learning service — generating character responses, tracking your progress, and personalizing your experience
- Improve AI responses and overall service quality
- Track your learning progress and adapt difficulty to your level
Third-party AI services
Your messages are processed by the following third-party services to power the learning experience:
- Anthropic (Claude) — Your conversation messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate character responses. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- ElevenLabs (premium feature) — If you use premium voice synthesis, your character responses are sent to ElevenLabs for high-quality text-to-speech.
- Deepgram (premium feature) — If you use premium speech recognition, your voice input is processed by Deepgram for speech-to-text conversion.
- Kokoro TTS (free tier) — On the free tier, text-to-speech runs entirely on your device using Kokoro. No data leaves your device for this feature.
Data retention
Your conversations are stored until you choose to delete them. You can delete individual conversations at any time from within the app.
If you delete your account, all of your data — including conversations, progress, and profile information — is permanently removed from our systems.
Children's privacy
Forked Tongue is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at the email below.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Export your conversation data

Cookies and Tracking
We use the following categories of cookies and local storage:
- Essential cookies: Authentication tokens, theme preferences, and consent choices. These are required for the app to function and cannot be disabled.
- Analytics cookies: When you consent, we use analytics cookies to understand usage patterns and improve the service. These help us see which features are popular and where users encounter issues.
- Advertising cookies: Google AdSense uses cookies to serve ads based on your interests. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on visits to our app and/or other sites on the internet. Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings.
Third-party cookies:
- Google AdSense — Used to display relevant advertisements to free-tier users.
- Google Analytics — Used to collect anonymized usage data when implemented and consented to.
Managing your preferences: You can manage your cookie preferences at any time through our cookie consent banner (click "Customize" when it appears) or through your browser's cookie settings. You can also clear your consent by removing the ft-cookie-consent entry from your browser's localStorage.
Our cookie consent implementation complies with IAB Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) v2.3 requirements, including granular consent options and timestamped records.
Advertising
We display ads to free-tier users through Google AdSense and our own bilingual ad system. These ads help us keep the free tier available to everyone.
- Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our app or other websites.
- You can opt out of personalized ads through our cookie consent banner or by visiting Google's Ads Settings.
- Paid subscribers (Plus and Premium plans) see no advertisements.
Community Places
If you submit recommendations or photos to our Community Places feature, that content is publicly visible to other users. Do not share personal information in community submissions.
Third-party services
In addition to the AI services listed above, we use the following third-party services:
- Google AdSense — For displaying advertisements to free-tier users. See Google's privacy policy.
- Google Analytics — For collecting anonymized usage data to improve the service (when implemented and consented to). See Google's privacy policy.
The app may display ads that link to external websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. Your continued use of Forked Tongue after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
