The metrics explained

Words are counted by splitting on whitespace after collapsing extra spaces. Characters (with spaces) is the total length; without spaces excludes all whitespace including tabs and newlines. Sentences are counted by splitting on .!? followed by whitespace or end-of-text; abbreviations may cause slight overcounts. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time uses 238 words per minute (standard adult silent-reading speed for prose). Speaking time uses 150 wpm (typical presentation pace). Technical content and audiobook narration are usually slower; conversational speech is faster.

Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade

Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words/sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables/words). Higher is easier. Scores: 90-100 very easy (5th grade), 60-70 plain English (8-9th grade), 30-50 college level, 0-30 college-graduate/professional. Flesch-Kincaid Grade = 0.39 × (words/sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables/words) − 15.59. Approximates US school grade level required.

Syllable counting uses vowel-cluster heuristics (with adjustments for silent E and common word endings). It's ~85% accurate for standard English; specialized/technical vocabulary throws it off.

Keyword density

Top 10 most-frequent non-stopword terms in your text, with counts and percentage of total words. Stopwords (common words like “the”, “a”, “of”) are filtered out. Useful for SEO content editing and spotting overused words.
