Which format when
PNG: lossless. Best for screenshots, diagrams, images with sharp edges or text, and anything that needs transparency. Files are much bigger than JPG for photographs.
JPG: lossy. Best for photographs, especially when file size matters and you don't need transparency. Old standard, works everywhere. Quality 80-90 is nearly indistinguishable from the original for most viewers.
WebP: Google's modern format. Supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. Typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. Universal browser support since 2020.
AVIF: the newest format, based on AV1 video codec. Typically 50%+ smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. Browser decode support is broad; browser encode support (needed for this tool) is spotty — the option is hidden on browsers that can't encode it.
Transparency + format changes
Converting a PNG or WebP with a transparent background to JPG replaces transparency with a solid color (usually white or black depending on browser). If you need to keep transparency, target PNG, WebP, or AVIF.
