How US federal tax brackets actually work
The most common tax misconception: “If I take that raise it'll bump me into a higher bracket and I'll take home less!” That is not how it works. US federal income tax is marginal: each dollar is taxed at the rate for its bracket, not the whole income at your top rate. A single filer in 2024 pays 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on income from $11,600–$47,150, 22% on income from $47,150–$100,525, and so on. Your marginal rate is the bracket your last dollar sits in; your effective rate is total tax divided by total income — always lower than marginal.
2024 IRS brackets (single)
10% up to $11,600 · 12% $11,601–$47,150 · 22% $47,151–$100,525 · 24% $100,526–$191,950 · 32% $191,951–$243,725 · 35% $243,726–$609,350 · 37% $609,351+
Taxable income vs. gross income
This calculator takes taxable income, which is your gross income after subtracting either the standard deduction ($14,600 single / $29,200 MFJ in 2024) or itemized deductions, plus pre-tax retirement contributions, HSA, etc. If you enter gross income by mistake, results will overstate your tax.
What this doesn't include
FICA (Social Security + Medicare = 7.65% up to wage base), state and local income tax, AMT, capital-gains treatment, credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC, etc.), or itemized-deduction phase-outs. This is federal ordinary-income tax only. For a full picture, use tax-prep software or a CPA.
