How this calculator works

This calculator uses the annualized method that most payroll systems use for federal withholding. Your gross pay is annualized to a full-year figure. Pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA, health premiums) reduce taxable wages before federal income tax and, for HSA and health, also before FICA. The standard deduction for your filing status is subtracted to get taxable income, which is run through the 2026 IRS brackets. FICA (Social Security 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base + Medicare 1.45%) is calculated on gross wages minus HSA and health premium contributions. Additional Medicare tax (0.9%) kicks in above $200k single / $250k MFJ / $125k MFS.

2026 tax data

Federal brackets come from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (issued October 2025). The Social Security wage base for 2026 is $184,500 per the SSA COLA announcement. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) of 2025 made the seven-bracket structure permanent and gave the bottom two brackets a larger inflation adjustment than the top five — that's already baked into the 2026 figures.

The nine no-income-tax states

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax wage income. NH taxes interest and dividends only (fully phased out for wages as of 2025), and WA has a capital gains tax on high earners but no wage tax. If you live in one of these states, this calculator is complete for your federal + state situation. Other states apply state income tax on top of what this calculator shows — use with awareness of that gap until state modules ship.

What this calculator does not include

State income tax (except the 9 no-tax states), local/city tax (NYC, Philadelphia, etc.), disability tax (CA SDI, NJ, NY), specific W-4 elections (additional withholding, dependents, credits), the child tax credit and other credits, itemized deductions, AMT, or benefits like commuter pre-tax. This is a working estimate of the biggest three (federal income tax + Social Security + Medicare), not a substitute for a payroll statement or a tax preparer.
