Currency Converter

Convert between 30+ world currencies using European Central Bank reference rates. Rates are cached in your browser and update once per business day.

This tool fetches exchange rates from Frankfurter (api.frankfurter.dev), which relays ECB data. Only the currency pair is sent to that endpoint — your amount and any other input stays in your browser. This is the only tool on the site that phones out; every other calculator is fully offline.

How this converter works

On page load, the tool fetches ECB reference rates for the day from the free, no-key Frankfurter API. All 30+ currencies are pulled at once relative to the euro, then any conversion is computed as a cross-rate through EUR — USD → GBP means USD → EUR → GBP in one step. Rates are cached in your browser's localStorage; if the API is unreachable on a later visit, the tool falls back to the cache and shows the date of the cached rates. If there's no cache and the fetch fails, the tool tells you rather than showing a wrong number.

Why ECB reference rates

The European Central Bank publishes daily reference rates around 16:00 CET on business days. These are widely used as a neutral, transparent midpoint. They are not live interbank rates — those tick moment to moment — and they are not what your bank or card network will actually give you. Your bank adds a spread (often 1-3%) plus fees. Wise, Revolut, and most online transfer services publish their own live rates that differ slightly from ECB.

When ECB rates don't apply

Weekends and ECB holidays — there's no new rate. Frankfurter returns the last business-day rate; the “as of” date in the result panel tells you exactly which day's rate is being used.

What this converter does not do

Real-time interbank rates, cryptocurrency, exotic currencies not on ECB's list (~30 majors), historical charts, or predictions. If you need those, use a broker or a service like Wise. If you're just checking “roughly how much is 500 dollars in yen,” this is the right tool.
