Asphalt density and coverage
Standard hot-mix asphalt weighs approximately 145 lb/ft³ (2,322 kg/m³) when compacted. That works out to about 110 lb per square foot per inch of depth. This calculator uses that density; specialty mixes (open-graded, stone matrix) vary slightly.
Depth guidelines
Residential driveway: 2–3" of finish course over a compacted 4–8" gravel base. Parking lot: 3–4" over 6–8" of base. Heavy-truck roads and industrial: 4"+ finish course over engineered base. Do not lay asphalt directly over uncompacted soil — the base matters more than the surface for long-term durability.
Ordering and delivery
Asphalt cools fast, so it's delivered hot and must be spread and compacted immediately — you can't stage it. Plants usually have a minimum order (2–5 tons) and delivery windows. Get multiple quotes: prices vary significantly by region and season (higher in summer/paving season).
