Measuring your lawn

Break irregular lawns into rectangles, circles, and triangles — sum their areas for the total. This calculator lets you add all three. For a really odd shape, use graph paper or an online tool like Google Earth's measurement tool. Small irregularities are absorbed by the waste factor.

Roll and pallet sizes

Most residential sod comes as 2×5 ft rolls (10 sq ft each), 45–50 rolls per pallet (~500 sq ft/pallet). Commercial “big roll” sod is 2×5 ft or larger for machine installation. Check with your local sod farm — specs vary regionally, and this calculator lets you override the defaults.

Install and care

Sod is a perishable product. Install within 24 hours of delivery, water immediately, and keep the soil moist for the first 2 weeks. Do not walk on new sod for 2 weeks; mow lightly after that. Order more than you think you need (waste factor helps) — running short mid-install and having to get one more pallet is expensive and awkward.
